Hulu's "Good American Family" is the gripping new series from Hulu, which premiered today with two episodes and will release new episodes through its finale on April 30. The series is inspired by the true story surrounding the adoption of Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian girl with an acute form of dwarfism. When a Midwestern couple, the Barnetts, adopted Natalia and started noting inconsistencies regarding her birth and age, they soon realized lies and deception were at play, and Natalia could very well be a dangerous threat to their family.
Created by Katie Robbins with showrunners Robbins and Sarah Sutherland, the series stars Mark Duplass and Ellen Pompeo as the Barnetts, Imogen Faith Reid as Natalia Grace, with Dulé Hill, Sarayu Blue, and Azriel Dalman rounding out the cast.
Told from multiple points of view as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma, this compelling drama is inspired by the disturbing story that initially spawned the 2023 Investigation Discovery docuseries "The Curious Case of Natalia Grace: The Final Chapter," which in great detail explores the details and aftermath of Natalia's adoption with the Barnetts. The explosive Hulu series dramatizes Natalia's adoption with the first American family she was placed with in the United States however, the Barnetts successfully petitioned the courts to have Natalia's legal age changed from 8 to 22, claiming she was an adult posing as a child with allegations that she threatened the Barnetts and their three sons. Natalia, in return, cited multiple cases of abuse, among others, placed and left alone in an apartment while the family moved to Canada.
The new Hulu series does a masterful job of telling the Barnett's perspective and Natalia's, leaving viewers to draw their own conclusions, with several allegations made on each side. With great performances by Pompeo and Reid, this series adds another layer to Natalia Grace's story.
The first two episodes of Good American Family are currently streaming on Hulu.
